Is mid-90s ok for 13 year olds? ›

There's a fair amount of fighting, including brutal bullying by Stevie's bigger brother. A sexual encounter between young teens, including the young-looking 13-year-old main character, is shown right up until the point that nudity would occur and is described in some detail later.

Some sex references but nothing strong. A man walks out a bedroom in one scene, (no sex shown) sex is implied. Stevie is hit on by an older girl. Discussion of "sucking" and "eating out" ones parents.

Looking at them together, it is obvious that Estee is older, and given how often she talks about Fuckshit, I am assuming that she is meant to be around his age — so, 16 or 17, vs. Stevie's 13.

Several major issues are barely addressed; for instance, throughout the film, Stevie repeatedly engages in self-harm — like scratching his leg raw with a wire brush after stealing money from his mother or attempting to choke himself with a chord after fighting with Ian — after doing “bad things.” This jarring behavior ...

Ian has an emotional breakdown when Stevie says that he has no friends and, following the conflict, a distressed Stevie attempts to asphyxiate himself with a cord from a Super NES controller, one of several self-harm incidents. The next day, Dabney forbids Stevie from hanging out with the boys.

Doing some research after the movie, I discovered that the female character was supposed to be somewhere in junior year-senior year of high school, so based on her looks she could be 16 at least or 19 at most. Whereas Sunburn was 13 years old.

Fresh score. Mid90s struggles with an identity, but manages to be entertaining and exotic. The cloud of memories remind all of us of our youth and the life-or-death struggles we went through in order to be the adult at the end of that journey. Fresh score.

A period piece set in the 1990s, like Jonah Hill's Mid90s, doesn't have much in common with, say, Braveheart, which was set in the 14th century.

For me the early 1990s are 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993, the mid 1990s are 1994, 1995 and 1996, and the late 1990s are 1997, 1998 and 1999.
